Setting Expectations

What Professional Cleaners Actually Clean (and What They Don't)

Professional residential cleaning covers routine surfaces and floors, not specialized deep treatments or restoration work. Understanding the boundary helps you plan what to handle separately and what to leave to the visit.

A professional cleaning visit focuses on the surfaces you touch and see every day: counters, floors, fixtures, and furniture. The work improves daily hygiene and appearance without requiring you to spend your own time scrubbing. But it does not include tasks that need different tools, training, or liability coverage—carpet extraction, high exterior windows, or appliance repair. Knowing what falls inside and outside a standard visit lets you ask the right questions and avoid surprises.

Kitchens: Surfaces, Sinks, and Appliance Exteriors

Cleaners wipe countertops, scrub sinks, clean stovetops, and wipe the outside of the refrigerator, oven, and microwave. They remove crumbs, grease film, and water spots from daily use. The inside of appliances—oven racks, refrigerator shelves, microwave interiors—falls outside the scope unless you arrange it separately in advance. Cabinet fronts and drawer pulls are wiped; the contents and interiors of cabinets are left as they are.

Bathrooms: Tiles, Tubs, Toilets, and Mirrors

Bathrooms receive full attention: toilets inside and out, sinks, faucets, mirrors, shower walls, tub surfaces, and tile grout within arm's reach. Soap scum, toothpaste residue, and water spots are scrubbed away. Mold embedded deep in grout or caulking that has turned black usually requires a separate mold remediation service. Towel bars, toilet paper holders, and light switches are wiped. Exhaust fan covers are dusted but not disassembled.

Floors: Vacuuming and Mopping, Not Deep Extraction

All floors are vacuumed or mopped depending on the surface. Carpets and rugs are vacuumed to remove dirt, pet hair, and dust. Hard floors—tile, vinyl, laminate, sealed wood—are mopped with appropriate cleaners. Carpet shampooing and upholstery deep cleaning require different equipment and fall outside a standard visit. Baseboards are dusted. If furniture needs to be moved to reach certain areas, ask in advance whether that is included or whether you should clear the space yourself.

Living Areas and Bedrooms: Dusting and Surface Work

Furniture surfaces, shelves within reach, windowsills, door handles, and light switches are dusted and wiped. Picture frames, lamps, and decorative objects are dusted in place, not rearranged. Bedding is not changed unless you arrange it ahead of time; the focus is on horizontal surfaces and floors. Ceiling fans, crown molding, and high shelves may be out of scope depending on height and access. Exterior window washing above ground level is not included; interior glass at reachable height is wiped.

What Stays Outside: Specialized Equipment and Liability

Tasks that require scaffolding, pressure washers, steam extraction machines, or work at height are handled by other specialists. Cleaners do not repair appliances, replace caulking, treat pest infestations, or handle biohazards. They do not organize closets, sort belongings, or discard items. The visit improves cleanliness and order within the space you have already arranged. If you need work that crosses into another trade—plumbing, electrical, mold remediation—schedule that separately and let the cleaning happen afterward.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Which rooms and surfaces are included in the standard visit?
  • Are appliance interiors, carpet shampooing, or high windows available as additions?
  • Do I need to move furniture, or will the cleaner work around it?
  • What cleaning products are used, and are they provided?
  • How do I cancel or reschedule if plans change?
  • Are the cleaners insured and background-checked?
